A Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

چکیده
We propose a new higher-dimensional mechanism for solving the hierarchy problem. The weak scale is generated from a large scale of order the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy. However, this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric (which is a slice of AdS5 spacetime). This mechanism relies on the existence of only a single additional dimension. We demonstrate a simple explicit example of this mechanism with two three-branes, one of which contains the Standard Model fields. The experimental consequences of this scenario are new and dramatic. There are fundamental spin-2 excitations with mass of weak scale order, which are coupled with weak scale as opposed to gravitational strength to the standard model particles. The phenomenology of these models is quite distinct from that of large extra dimension scenarios; none of the current constraints on theories with very large extra dimensions apply.

Five-dimensional scenario with a fluctuating three-brane: an stochastic approach to gravity
A five-dimensional scenario with a non compact extra dimension of infinite extent is studied, in which a single three-brane is affected by small Gaussian fluctuations in the extra dimension. The average magnitude of the fluctuations is of order of the electro-weak length scale (σ ∼ m−1 EW ). The model provides an stochastic approach to gravity that accounts for an alternative resolution of the ...

The Randall-Sundrum model with a small curvature is considered in which five-dimensional Planck scale lies in the TeV region, and a spectrum of Kaluza-Klein gravitons reminds that in one flat extra dimension. The cross sections for interactions of ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos with nucleons are calculated. It is shown that effects related with massive graviton excitations can be detected i...
متن کاملA Solution to the Hierarchy Problem with an Infinitely Large Extra Dimension and Moduli Stabilization
The work of Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali (ADD) [1] and of Randall and Sundrum (RS) [2] has stimulated interest in explaining the observed weakness of gravity (the “hierarchy problem”) using extra dimensions. The ADD solution requires the new dimensions to have finite but quite large volume, which introduces a new hierarchy between the volume of the compact dimension and the fundamental sc...
متن کاملThe Many Guises of Endometriosis: Giant Abdominal Wall Endometriosis Masquerading as An Incisional Hernia
Endometriosis is defined by the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. Despite being a lead cause of chronic pelvic pain and infertility, its clinical presentation can vary, leading to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Extra-pelvic endometriosis is particularly difficult to diagnose owing to its ability to mimic other conditions. Endometrial tissue in a surgical...
متن کاملChapter 1 Extra Dimensions
We begin with a discussion of a model with a flat extra dimension which addresses the flavor hierarchy of the Standard Model (SM) using profiles for the SM fermions in the extra dimension. We then show how flavor violation and contributions to the electroweak precision tests can be suppressed [even with O(TeV) mass scale for the new particles] in this framework by suitable modifications to the ...
